ESSENTIAL HIKING GEAR THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE ON YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

Updated: Sep 20, 2021

Many people want to get outside and explore the wilderness but feel intimidated by the trek that could be ahead. Going on a hike is a great way to experience nature and if you prepare correctly, you are more likely to enjoy your trip without facing unnecessary challenges.

Hiking can take you to places that you wouldn’t be able to ever reach if you didn’t go on foot. The adventure opportunities are numerous, with thousands of hiking trails available to explore the corners of the world. Whether you want to go on an easy day-long trail or go deep into the mountains, it is critical to carry the proper equipment.

To determine what you need to bring on your hikes depends on how far your trip will be, how remote the location is and what the weather has in store. From beginners to vetted backcountry travellers, bringing the essential hiking gear is a top priority to any trip.

OUR TOP FIVE

The following is our list of the essential hiking equipment that any hiker will need to have a safe and enjoyable adventure.

1. Hiking Backpack

A backpack is the first piece of gear most people think of using when planning their journey. However, not all backpacks are made equally. You shouldn’t use any old backpack that you have laying around on your hikes. Invest in a backpack specifically for hiking, as they have a supportive hip belt that will transfer your weight from your shoulders to your much stronger hips. As well, they will have various compartments that are made for your journey so you can stay organized while carrying all of the things that are needed for the day.

2. Hiking Boots/Shoes

Since hiking obviously involves using your feet to reach your destination, hiking boots are by far one of the most important pieces to invest in. If you are planning on hiking through any type of terrain, it is essential to invest in yourself, and therefore, your feet.

There is nothing worse than having bad, unsupportive shoes. So, could you imagine going through miles of uneven terrain without good hiking boots? Therefore, you need to scout out a good pair of hiking boots that are high quality, fit your foot well and will be supportive throughout your trek.

3. Trekking Poles

Trekking Poles are there to assist you on your hike by providing extra stability on those rough trails. Having extra help will support your walking rhythm and will ultimately reduce the strain on your joints. As you can see, these poles are not just for beginners, as they provide benefits to anyone who uses them.

As you are hiking, you won’t want to carry anything bulky. Find a pair of trekking poles that are lightweight and adjustable. This way, they won’t weigh you down and, you can easily use them for staying balanced.

4. Navigation

You don’t want to end up in a situation where you are lost in the middle of nowhere. When you go on hikes, especially more remote adventures, always carry a navigation tool. The tools include a map and a trusty compass. These tools are essential to take on hikes as they are reliable, lightweight, durable and can help you find your way.

5. Our Personal Favourite – Neck Gaiter

The neck gaiter is our favourite due to its multi-function. The most common use of a neck gaiter is to protect you from the weather. Keep your face and neck from getting cold and wind burned. Or provide UV protection on those warm sunny days. The bonus of a tube neck gaiter is the multiple ways you can wear it. Headscarf, bandana, headband, wristband, cap… heck you can even use them as a small rag/towel if needed, the list is endless. You will be surprised just how handy they are during your adventures.
